Proclamation 2016 to include ethnic studies materials

 The State Board of Education Friday broadened its call for new textbooks for Special Topics in Social Studies to include but not be limited to, Mexican American Studies, African American Studies, Native American Studies and Asian American Studies.

Thirteen named to Expanded Learning Opportunities Council

  Commissioner of Education Michael Williams has announced the names of 13 individuals to serve as the first members of the Expanded Learning Opportunities Council to study issues related to expanded learning opportunities (such as implementing an extended school day or school year) and review structured programs outside of the regular school day (such as before- and after-school programs and summer programs).

Commissioner Williams authorizes calculator apps for 8th grade STAAR mathematics in 2014-2015

  Commissioner of Education Michael Williams has advised superintendents he will allow districts to satisfy a requirement to use graphing calculators for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) grade 8 mathematics assessment with either a traditional handheld graphing calculator or a graphing calculator application available on an electronic tablet. The Commissioner’s decision marks the first time an electronic calculator application has been authorized for use by students in a Texas state assessment.

TEA announces early college high school designations

Commissioner of Education Michael Williams today announced final approval of 44 Early College High School (ECHS) designations for the 2014-2015 school year. With these designations, Texas will become home to 109 ECHS campuses across the state.
