    Texas Education Code

The Texas Education Code (TEC) is a set of the state statutes (laws) governing public education in Texas. It applies to all educational institutions supported in whole or in part by state tax funds, unless specifically excluded by the code. The TEC directs the goals and framework of public education in Texas. It is established by the Texas Legislature.

According to the TEC, the mission of public education is to ensure that all Texas children have access to a quality education that enables them to achieve their potential and fully participate now and in the future in the social, economic, and educational opportunities of our state and nation.

The TEC directs how public education in Texas will work to meet the following objectives:

    • Involve parents in their child's education
    • Challenge students to meet their full educational potential
    • Prevent dropouts
    • Ensure a well-balanced and appropriate curriculum
    • Prepare students to be thoughtful, active citizens
    • Recruit, develop, and retain qualified and highly effective personnel
    • Help students demonstrate exemplary performance in comparison to national and international standards
    • Provide safe and disciplined environments conducive to learning
    • Encourage educators to keep current with instructional techniques
    • Implement and use technology to increase the effectiveness of student learning
